Mining opal is done by several methods. First there is hand mining. this is done by digging a shaft and following the opal down and along the drives. Slow hard work and sometimes dangerous. On some fields like Mintabie, they sometimes use bobcat diggers underground. Then there is open cut mining, where machinery is used to dig the opal out. Machinery like an excavator or a bull dozer.

Opals are divided in three main categories:
(Typ1 - 100% Opal), (Typ2 - Boulderopal), (Typ3 - Matrixopal).

	Solid opals are are from pure opal.
	Doublets are compound from 2 parts.
	The Triplet consists of a small layer of solid opal.
